November 23, 2016 – The City of Midland is currently accepting applications for the 2017 Citizens Academy, a free 10-week course designed to give citizens an up-close and personal look at how local government functions and helps shape our community.
During the academy, participants attend weekly 2-hour sessions that explore different functional areas of City government and learn about how their roles impact daily life for residents of Midland. For many sessions, participants will also receive a “behind-the-scenes” tour of the location they visit; stops include the Law Enforcement Center, Midland County Jail, City Hall, and more. As an added bonus, one session will be devoted entirely to Midland County government and explores how the City and County collaborate to make the community run smoothly.
Sessions for the 2017 academy will take place on Wednesday evenings from 6:30-8:30 p.m. from January 11 to March 15 and will be held at various municipal facilities. A full schedule will be provided to participants prior to their first class.
Due to space limitations, the Citizens Academy is limited to 25 participants. Midland residency is not required to participate; however, if there are more applicants than available spaces, first preference will be given to residents within the city.
Applications for the 2017 Citizens Academy will be accepted through Thursday, December 15 at 5 p.m. and can be found online at www.cityofmidlandmi.gov/citizensacademy or at the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library reference desk or the City Hall information desk. Participants selected for the 2017 academy will be notified by December 30, 2016.
