Pergola Structures Coming to Downtown Midland Week of June 4

Downtown Pergola

June 4, 2018 - Construction begins this week on two Main Street pergola structures, another amenity being added to the new downtown Midland streetscape.

Community partners Chemical Bank and Three Rivers Corporation provided the funding for the two pergola structures, while other area businesses donated labor and materials, including Dewitt Lumber, Concrete Cutting Specialists, Inc., Fisher Contracting, Lake Painting, MacAllister Rentals, New Century Engineering & Design, Prime Industrial Fasteners, Valley Electrical Contractors, Inc. and Hymmco.

The pergolas will be located on the southeast corner of Ashman and Main and the northwest corner of Rodd and Main.  The garden-arbor design adds a unique visual element to the streetscape while providing additional seating and shade for visitors to downtown Midland.

There will be times of limited sidewalk access around the pergola construction sites, but parking and pedestrian walkways will remain relatively open throughout construction.

The $7.2 million streetscape project completed in 2017 was made possible through generous funding provided by the Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow Foundation, Charles J. Strosacker Foundation and Rollin M. Gerstacker Foundation.  Opportunities to add signature pieces like the pergola structures, fire places, specialty seating and gaming tables were presented as funding opportunities to businesses and individuals.

“We are extremely grateful to Chemical Bank, Three Rivers Corporation and the numerous local businesses who are so generous with their time, talent, and funding,” said Community Affairs Director Selina Tisdale.  “The pergola structures and other amenities add a personal touch to the new streetscape and contribute greatly to the uniqueness and charm of downtown Midland.”

Watch for other streetscape amenities to be added throughout the summer.
